Lila at almost 6 months old!

Lila will turn 6 months old while we are on vacation so I thought I'd highlight what she's been doing in during her 6th month.

Lila has been loving being on her belly more and more now that she can push herself up with her hands. She tries to scoot side to side and sometimes a little backwards. I'm guessing she will start crawling in the next month or two, but I was wrong with Ethan. She is very close to rolling from back to front. So much that she gets to her side and her arm is in the way. She reaching for toys that are next to her with ease when on her back.

In the month of May, we dedicated Lila to God in front of our new church, One Life Church, and our families. It was funny to listen to her talking and gurgling while our pastor talked about her and our family.
Our pretty girl dressed up in her cousins white dress.
Talking with Papa before church began.
"It's hard to be this cute!"

Ethan loves to pretend he's a baby too and lays under her playmat.
He's also a wonderful helper even when we don't want his help :)
Lila adores her brother, but I can tell that secretly she's a little afraid of him.

Hanging out with mommy & brother.

In May Lila rolled over for the camera, grasped toys very well and had what we thought was her 1st cold, but may have been teething. She started playing with her hands and feet trying to get them into her mouth and got up on her arms. She also started grabbing toys and purposely throwing them.

At her early 6 month check-up she was 17 lbs 4 oz (73%), 27 1/4 inches long (95%) and her head circumference put her in the 90%. She's growing and I assume that like her brother she will be well over 20 lbs by the time she turns one.

Lila's growth spurt

Lila has always been a very long baby. She was born at almost 21 inches and at 2 months old was just as long as Ethan was at 4 months old. I'll be curious to see how much she weighs when she goes in for her early 6 month appointment on the 28th. At her 4 month visit she was 25 3/4 inches long (92%), so I'm guessing if the trend has continued she'll be at about 27 or 28 inches. Her brother is 36 inches at 3 years old. I have a feeling Ethan will be short and Lila will be tall, but we'll see.

I have forgotten to blog about Lila on a month to month basis so I'll just catch up now. In April when she turned 4 months old Lila learned how to roll over front to back when no one was watching. She started talking a lot and shrilling. She started eating rice cereal, veggies, bananas, and applesauce make by Mommy. We learned that she hates peas and that if you mix in pears or bananas she will eat it without making a funny face.

She started playing in her jumperoo bouncing very well, squealing all the way.  She started sleeping longer at night eventually ending up waking up on 1-2 times a night with a 7 hour stretch at the first half of the night. She started scooting a bit when put on her tummy. She would move from side to side to get a toy.

We realized that she was teething and the nurse at the doctors office looked at her mouth and told us she had about 6-8 teeth coming in. Thankfully they didn't all come out at the same time. She's working on the lower two now. She also started giggling.

In May Lila had her first play date, started picking up toys when in her lap and throwing them with a good grip on them. She rolled over for the camera for the first time. It's still early enough in May that I haven't written down a lot of what she's doing, but there's still another 2 weeks until she turns 6 months old.

6 months old seems strange. My baby is almost 1/2 a year old and it's gone by so incredibly fast. Don't get me wrong it's been wonderful to see her grow, change and see her personality shine through, but I will miss her baby days when it's completely over. I hope I can soak up as much of Lila being little as I can. With Ethan I was always ready for the next stage and looked back and wished I hadn't wished it away. I guess that's why we have more kids so we can experience it over and over again and make up for what we either forgot or wished away.

Fatten him up

In our quest to fatten Ethan up I have been given smoothie and shake recipes that are anywhere from 500 calories to almost 1100 calories. I hope this works since he hasn't gained weight in over a year. The doctors and dietician aren't concerned since his weight to height ratio is still over 50% at 57%, but I am. In the last several weeks Ethan has gone from eating a very good breakfast and so-so lunch and dinner, to not wanting to eat very much at all.

I called the dietician last week to see if we could do anything and she sent me the recipes. They are really tasty. I have to try to stay away from them, but fortunately Ethan loves them.

Here's my favorite and it's 1070 calories and 23 grams of protein. This recipe makes an 8 oz glass.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
3 tablespoons chocolate syrup
1 1/2 cups chocolate ice cream

YUMMY!!! I hope he keeps this up. We are told he needs about 1425 calories a day, so with this, mediocre meals and some milk he should be right where he needs to be. We can only give him this particular shake once a week so it doesn't make his liver enzymes rise. Oh, the joys of remembering everything as a CF Mom.

Lila rolling over

Lila has been rolling over since 4 months old, but we had a really hard time getting her to do it on camera. Ken still has yet to see her do it, but I caught it the other day on camera. She is now 5 1/2 months old!

Being consistent

Since Ethan got out of the hospital last July he has been struggling with behavior problems. He kicks, screams and throws things when he doesn't get his way or is angry. It feels like we have tried everything. It's hard not to feel like a failure as a parent when you can't control your own kid.

In restaurants when he barely hits his head he screams like Mariah Carey sings. It's embarrassing. The only solution I have is to take him outside. Once he is calm he will let you talk to him and his behavior will change but overall it stays the same.

I struggle with what to do to cause him to behave better. What do I do next? I guess we have to pick one thing that he needs to improve on and that we as parents need to improve on and be consistent. Being consistent is hard especially when we have two kids with different temperments. Lila basically laughs at him when he freaks out and his whole body turns into a noodle when you try to pick him up. Other than letting him cry, scream or lay on the floor having a tantrum I don't know what else to do.

Am I a failure as a parent? Deep down I know I'm not, but it sure does feel like it sometimes.
