I've noticed over the last couple weeks since Ethan turned two he's been talking a lot more. I figured I need to blog about it so I can remember all the cute things he's been saying.
"Cotco" (Costco) He will point to Costco no matter what direction we are driving towards Costco. He knows where it is and all the roads that lead to Costco. Even when we're at Target or Safeway he will still talk about Costco.
"etza" (pizza) Today at Costco as soon as our pizza came to our table he was talking about pizza.
"cookie" He says this one mostly about the cookie monster on his diapers. One night before bed he pointed to the overnight diapers and said, "Pooh" and then to his daytime diapers and said, "Cookie".
"Bow Mommy" This is his way of saying "No Mommy". This is his response to most of my requests. It's the way he says it that makes it so cute. He's so sure of himself and certain that if it's my idea it must be a bad idea.
"bubbles" While having photos done yesterday at the park he played with bubbles and couldn't stop saying the word. He knows all about bubbles and loves them.
"Eo later" (See you later) He's now started using this one when he's supposed to without hearing someone else say it.
"Ere you go" (Here you go")
"Go Mommy" or "Go Daddy" He says this while we're driving and when we're not following him fast enough.
"bapple" (apple)
"Welwa" (Ella) He loves his cousin Ella who is almost exactly two years older than him.
"Melmo" (Elmo) His best friend is his Elmo that Ella gave him for Christmas from her own collection. He sleeps with it every night and plays with it during the day.
"cheese" He uses cheese for Mac 'n Cheese, sliced cheese and his fake cheese from his kitchen.
"TT" (for his auntie) Whether she's in her car or right in front of him he has to yell "TT" whenever he sees her.
"NanaPapa" It's usually one word because he's so excited about his Nana & Papa.
"sky" He says this as he points to the sky
He loves to sing songs like "Inkle, Inkle Little star" and "Baa, Baa Black Sheep have you any wool", "Row, Row, Row Your boat" and "ABC's".
I can't remember anymore words right now but I'll try to post more about what he's talking about as he continues to talk more. It's so fun to have him start copying us more and also makes us pay a little more attention to what we say.

Ethan's Elmo Birthday Party
For Ethan's 2nd birthday we decided to give him an Elmo themed birthday party. I found cupcake cups that had Elmo on them and Elmo rings to put on top of the cupcakes. We put up red & yellow streamers at my parents house and had a big Elmo balloon with a dozen red & yellow balloons. Ethan's little buddies came to play and had a great time.

A little upset on his birthday.

For Ethan's birthday we got him a little wooden kitchen. He loved it and played with it for 45 minutes straight after Ken put it together.

Ethan also loved all the toys he got at his birthday party, but I think his favorite was the drill he got from Nana & Papa as you can see from all the cupcake pictures. He didn't want to let go of it long enough to eat. He likes to go around our house now fixing things with his drill. I can't wait for his 3rd birthday party. I wonder what we'll do next year.

Ethan turns 2!!!
On Saturday my baby, I mean big boy, turned 2 years old! I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. It seems like we just brought him home from the hospital and now he's so big and growing fast. He's doing a lot of things. He's talking a lot, most of it we don't quite understand, but you can catch a word here and there. He loves everything Elmo and loves playing with all his toys. He's very independent although lately he's loved taking Ken or me by the hand and walking around the couch for 20-30 minutes at a time. He's strong-willed, stubborn and loves to do things his way. I love this age. Everything is so exciting to him.
He likes to play at the park and walk everywhere including up and down the hills at the park. We've been enjoying playing t-ball in our backyard. It's so funny to watch him hit the ball with the wrong end of the bat.
He's been spending a lot more time with me now that I'm not working and it shows. I love spending my days with him. We've been learning how to fill our days so we're not bored by planning play dates, trips to the park, walks, and lunch with daddy. It's interesting trying to plan our days so that we don't spend any money.
It's hard to think of all the things he's able to do now, but I'll try to list some them. He's just starting saying "Here you go" or some version of it. I would say he says about 30-40 words that we can understand. The rest of the words he's saying he's very adamant when he says them. He has a lot to say and isn't afraid to say it. I wish I could understand all that he says.
Ethan still sleeps in his crib and I'm in no hurry to get him out of it. I'll let him sleep in it as long as he will. I don't look forward to training him to sleep in a toddler bed. He's a great sleeper as he's been since he was born. We get 2 to 2 1/2 hour naps in the afternoon and he sleeps all night all the time. He loves to go to bed. In fact, if you say "Are you tired?" he'll say "Night Night" and grab his blankie and Elmo and head to the gate to go upstairs.
We've been so lucky to have such a laid back baby. Now that he's a toddler he's much more head strong, but it's fun to see him develop his personality.
Once I get the rest of the photos from Ethan's birthday party I'll post about his party. Hopefully that will be in the next couple days.

Big change
On Saturday afternoon I quit my job. I won't get completely into it but I had been unhappy for awhile and felt miserable going to work.
Now I'm looking to work in an office once again. It's been 7 years since I did that so it's proving to be difficult to find work. I want to continue to work part time so I can be home with Ethan while he's little. It's frustrating being at home full time mostly because I feel like I'm not contributing. I mean, I know I'm taking care of Ethan and that's essential and very important but I'm not used to not helping out financially. I wish I knew how long it would take me to find a job so I could enjoy this time at home. I just feel so guilty.
Anyways, that's the news. Hopefully I'll feel better about it as the week goes on and the sun comes out. This rain fits my mood perfectly today. Gotta go play with my little man. He's going to be 2 in just 5 days!!!

Schwiesow Christmas Part 1
I am so late with this post but I really need to post about it.
This year for Christmas we did what we always do, we spend Christmas morning at my sister's and Christmas afternoon/evening at my parents house.
On Christmas morning Ken, Ethan and I got up and enjoyed some time together in front of the tree. Ethan got a CAT truck that we found at Costco. He loved it, but was still running around with his new lawnmower from the day before.

We headed over to my sister's house for brunch about 10am. There we munched on a french toast dish, an egg casserole, bagels, and drank mimosas. Christmas at my sister's this year was very nice. It was calm and the kids seemed to wait for each other to open gifts.
Here's Ken with our nephew Judah (8 months)

Ethan has been obsessed with Elmo lately and I'm not sure if my 3 1/2 year old niece knew it at the time but she decided to wrap up one of her own Elmo's and give it to Ethan to take home. The Elmo was probably one of his favorite gifts from the day.

My mom was happy to receive 3 coffee mugs with photos of her grandchildren on them.

We had a great morning together and soon headed off to our own houses for naps and met up later at my mom & dad's for dinner. More to come about that.

Just one more...
A topic that often comes up in our house is whether we should have another baby. With Ethan having Cystic Fibrosis and the odds being that another baby would have a one in four chance of having it as well we are cautious.
It's all how you look at it. We could say there's a 25% chance that our next baby would have CF. But, you could also look at it like there's a 75% chance that we would have a healthy baby with no CF. The baby would still have a 2 in 4 chance of being a carrier and a 1 in 4 chance of having nothing.
Is that a risk worth taking? To us, it is. That might sound awful to some people. Why would anyone want there to be a risk that their child would be born with a chronic illness?
Here's how we look at it. We were blessed to have Ethan even with his CF. I wouldn't trade him for a healthy child. The CF does not define who he is. He is an amazing child who loves to sing, dance, play and most of all talk. We love him no matter what and his life is just as precious as any other child's.
We also really want to give him a sibling. I grew up with a sister and although we weren't that close until high school & college she is one of my best friends today. I want Ethan to know what it's like to have someone who gets him because he or she was there and grew up beside him. If our next child did have CF, they would have each other for support and even if our next child didn't have CF, they still would have each other.
I realize that our decision will be met with much criticism. All I ask is that if you don't agree with us that you keep your words to yourself. We have put a lot of thought and time into our decision. It's been a very difficult decision to make and we worry about the outcome all the time. We pray for a healthy baby but know that God might very well give us another baby with CF and if that's His plan then we're at peace with that.
We don't intend to have any more children after the second. We feel that that's the right decision for our family.
We value your support as our friends and family and hope that you will embrace our family and our decision.

Christmas with the Dean's
This year we celebrated Christmas with Ken's family on Christmas Eve. Ken's parents, his brother and us met up at his Granner's house. We ate ham, potato salad, rolls and Ken's favorite homemade applesauce.
Here's Ethan eating his morning snack:

We decided to let Ethan start opening his gifts before his nap so we could open ours while he slept.
One of Ethan's gifts was a lawnmower which he immediately took off with and used all over the house. We had a hard time getting him back to open more presents after that.

My favorite gift of the day was getting my Kindle Fire! I've used it to read a few chapters of a book, but mostly have used it to play Angry Birds. I also loved the new desk that I got from Ken's parents. It fits perfectly between the pantry and the door to the garage. It's been so nice to not have to keep my laptop on the kitchen table.
Ken's favorite gifts of the day were a long sleeved 49er shirt and his workbench. It's not assembled yet, but hopefully it will be by tomorrow and installed in the next couple weeks.
Ethan's favorite toy was his lawnmower. He also received some books, movies and a parking garage to roll all his cars down. I was very happy for him to also get a picnic bench for our backyard.
We had a wonderful time and were excited to give Ken's parents and brother a custom calendar from Costco and his Granner a birdhouse.
I'll post more about the Schwiesow Christmas in the next couple days.
